TIckled Yellow

I'd be fibbin' if I said I was anything other than delighted to receive a package from Boone, NC in this morning's mail. In it was attire for both Retired Guy and me to wear on November 17th, a lovely sign to hold up at that game (For Sale--Recently Destroyed Big House) and some mardi gras beads to accessorize the ensemble.

But the very, very best part of the entire package are copies of the The Watauga, filled with photos taken by my good blog buddy, Marie (and sender of said package). Marie, words will never be able to adequately express my sincere thanks for the gifts. The best I can do is to promise to wear that shirt in the Not-So-Big-House on November 17th! It will be a pleasure. Muchas Gracias, Marie.

Ta Ta

Have a great weekend y'all!
We're off to the Cushing house (AKA, land of no connectivity) for the weekend. I'll try to post via the iPhone, but even that reception is a bit skitchy up there.

While we're gone, College Football will kick off the 2007 season. There are a couple of barn burners this weekend: the Mountaineers of ASU will invade the Big House (at right) and the Penguins of YSU will visit Ohio Stadium.

We wish the Mountaineers well and we hope that the Penguins will be seeing a lot of this:
If they don't see a lot of this, well then I'm guessing that Ohio State won't be seeing a lot of first downs. (That's Beanie Wells, our running back, and by week four of this season, he's going to be a household name...you heard it here first).

Those Crazy Buckeyes

A field yellow-leafed soybeans with a message......planted in a field about 10 miles from where I grew up. It's not just me. It's the entire state.

Thanks for Dropping By

If you're looking (and about 700 of you are) for Gisele and the masai (Red AmEx Ad) you won't find it here. It's here. There's also a really nice article about the masai man in the ad here.

If you're looking (which many of you seem to be doing today) for Script O'Shit, here ya go:
Come again soon!

Oh. My. Goodness. (Go Bucks!)

One of my little Michigan friends sent me the above picture with a question:
If Ohio State loses do you think Samson will shave his pretty locks in mourning?
Answer: I'm guessing not, as a high quality mullet such as this has obviously taken many years to cultivate and separation from lovely mullet could not be easy.

Why oh why do they always have to be OSU fans? Why can't we find a Michigan fan lacking in good taste and common sense?
I can only hope that this was taken years ago when mullets were in style.

My little Michigan friend was kind enough to offer best wishes for tonight's game and to let me know she's pullin' for the Bucks. That's so sweet, isn't it?

This Is Usually The Kiss of Death

We should be out of the Number 1 spot by the end of the weekend.

Slowly But Surely

.... I'm getting over the debacle that was Monday night....I'm making positive progress in working through my seven stages of grief:

I've delivered the case of orange and blue wrapped beer to the tennis pro's house, the tennis pro who happens to be a Florida letter winner.
I've delivered our resignation letter from the club to the club President.

I've stopped uttering Tourette's-like f-bombs at random moments.
I've started uttering 'damn' at random moments, but without much venom, frequency or passion. Really. The damns are as ineffective as OSU's defense.

I've stopped throwing Buckeyes at my picture of Urban Meyer. It's no fun to pick on a guy who thinks pleather is still in style.
I've resumed throwing Buckeyes at my picture of Bill Belichick. This only has a little to do with Belichick's collaboration with Meyer, and more to do with the disaster that was his tenure with the Browns. In this house tt will never become unfashionable to throw things at Mr. Bill.

I've stopped the "Urban for Cleveland" campaign. Afterall, he and the SEC are made for each other.
I've started the "If You Give Us Back your Damn Buckeye, We'll Give you A Baby Gator to Carry in Your Purse" campaign for Shelley Meyer.

And the real proof that I'm getting over it?
I can finally offer heartfelt condolences to Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan on the recent passing of his mother, Lilly......wasn't little Billy cute?

Quotes of the Night

It comes down to two:
1) It took Florida 90 years to win its first National Championship...now they have their second in 100 years of football.
2) Coach Urban, when asked about his National Championship jacket in the post-game interview: "Nike's been good to us...we have to be good to them."

This from the guy who earlier in the week said:

This is the first time this Bowl has been played -- distanced itself from the other Bowls. We have an obligation to put a good product on the field. Make no doubt about it, this is a business trip and we will handle it as such.

Call me bitter or a poor loser, but college football is not pay for play. It's a GAME. It's fun (except for tonight when it was decidedly unfun). It is not supposed to be a business and to do or say anything that accelerates the decline to professionalism is wrong. With his two quotes this week Urban has clearly indicated that he sees this as a business, not a game.

Take the trophy. It's not worth that much.

I Have Two Things to Say

Ohio State's Band is still undeniably better than Florida's.
Urban Cryer will hopefully remain true to his history and become coach of the Cleveland Browns next season. He's coached a beautiful game tonight.

GAAHHHH.
Daughter of a preacher man says JE*&())W FU%*$()*(%#(W* C)$*#N. Did we ever suck tonight. That was beat down of epic proportion.

Hats off to the Florida Gators.

TBDBITL Ramp Entrance

The Ohio State University Marching Band has entered Ohio Stadium for every game in a precision drill that's unchanged since the early 1900's. Here's the The Best Damn Band In The Land and the Ramp Entrance.

Top 5 Reasons Ohio State Will Beat Florida

5) Scarlet and Gray accessories look far better than orange and blue accessories, even if you are a Winter. Orange tends to make one look pale and it evidently causes you to wear silly hats.

2) Our O-H-I-O beats that crazy gator chomp:

3) The SweaterVest. No illustration necessary
2) Script Ohio:
And Finally, the Number One Reason The Ohio State University will beat the University of Florida.......we do not have a SuperFan:

Amusements from the Internets

Places to go to kill time until 7 pm when my crush Kirk Herbstreit and his fellow College Gamedayers begin coverage of the game (I'll update this throughout the day)....so again, if you've come for anything other than OSU junk, you'll need to come back tomorrow when we resume our regular blogging about Maine and cooking:
Stewart Mandell breaks down the keys to Tressel's success
Pat Forde thinks Troy has "the look"--the same one he had before other HUGE games
The premier sports blog on the planet (Every Day Should Be Saturday), breaks down the game position by position. Be warned: It's a Gator Blog.
MZone, despite selling out its Big Ten brethren, picks OSU/
We Are the Boys has predictions of a Florida upset, although based on the links they've chosen, it' doesn't look like much of an upset. It looks like Florida is heavily favored.
Jeff at Buckeye Battle Cry has a few thoughts
11 Warriors has just published their prediction.
We might lose as a punishment for this. (Caution: link proves excessively embarrassing to anyone from Ohio.)
Florida might lose as a punishment for this (Urban's wife carries a buckeye in her purse for good luck.)
Fox predicts an OSU win in a GREAT game.

It's GO Time, Baby

Apologies if you've come in search of tidbits about Maine or a recipe or anything but Ohio State football.

Today is all OSU Buckeyes, all the time. Non-blogging time is being spent lying on the couch in my Ohio State Hoodie, wearing my Woody cap watching (in this order) the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, the 2005 Ohio State Michigan game, the 2006 Ohio State Michigan Game and some selected YouTube videos such as:
6-0
Boom
Troy Smith for Heisman
15 Top Plays.

How will it end? I don't know. I don't have a great feeling about this game. Why? Well first off, we've had so many happy endings recently it's almost time for karma to catch up to us; then there's the fact that Troy has always lived up to that big game expectation. He's only human and how many of these can he string together?; then, as everyone tells us, Florida stands no chance against us; and that only serves to put a big chip on their shoulder pad and a bullseye on our jerseys; add to the list that Lllloyd isn't coaching the Gators; and finally, OSU's record vs. SEC teams is abysmal. It does not look good, does it?

On the other side: I am a superstitious ex-athlete. I watched (or rather listened to) the second half of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl with my cheek pressed against the cool tiles of my bathroom floor, having caught the nasty flu bug that was racing through the Nasty. There's a 97.7% chance that I'll also be listening to (unless we move a TV into the bathroom) the 2007 National Championship Game with my cheek pressed against the cool tiles of the bathroom floor, having caught the nasty flu bug that was racing through our National Sales Meeting last week. So that's a plus.
Ohio State is 3-0 in games that I don't have a good feeling about this season. Another plus.
Then, we have Tressel. Triple HUGE plus.
Finally, even if Troy doesn't have his best game, he seems to find a way to win. Now I feel better.

Prediction: OSU 34-21 (21 cuz Florida cannot kick a field goal)

It's Almost Go Time, Baby

Did I Mention....

that I'm having a Magical Day?
Not by choice, mind you. It's the bi-annual event that is officially called the National Sales Meeting. It should be called hell. Rumor has it that some people like this week and enjoy the meeting. I've not met one yet, but they tell me they're around. I have until Sunday morning to find one.

Anyway, there's some upside to being here. Local news is all about the Florida Gators and the upcoming National Championship game (Monday January 8--The Ohio State University versus the University of Florida 8 pm, baby)

Last night, they ran a clip of Urban Meyer, talking about his team's focus and preparation and he said something that made my heart hurt.
He said

This is the first time this Bowl has been played -- distanced itself from the other Bowls. We have an obligation to put a good product on the field. Make no doubt about it, this is a business trip and we will handle it as such.

College football is commercial and it is big business.

But to openly label a sport (a sport that is still layed by teenagers playing it for the love of the game, most of whom will never Play for Pay) a Product and to call a bowl game a business trip seems overtly cynical and very sad. There's a reason that we say "play a game".... There's a reason we work. Shouldn't we keep the two separated?

Troy Smith's Bracelet

I had a spike in traffic to the site yesterday, and discovered it was a Troy Smith spike.

It seems a lot of you want to know about that yellow bracelet that he wears.....

It's a LiveStrong bracelet from the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

He wears two--one for offensive coordinator Jim Bollman and one for quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels--both of whom were diagnosed with cancer this year.

If you or a family member are battling cancer, I can't endorse the LiveStrong Organization highly enough. They provide information on patients' rights, treatments, uplifting stories of miraculous survival and the organization lobbies Congress very effectively.

Congratulations Troy

OH-IO
Troy Smith collects Ohio State's 7th Heisman Trophy.

Now, it's go time.

Watch out Florida. You are nothing but a small pebble on the road to our National Championship.

"Normally, I'm pretty cool in pressure situations, but my heart is pounding really fast now," Smith said, who had big hugs for his mother, sister and coach Jim Tressel before taking the podium for his speech.

"I'm at a loss for words. I just can't believe this is happening. ... It means everything. Just to be here in this situation. I love everybody back home in Columbus."

Heisman Heart Warming

Tonight's Heisman Trophy Presentation is much more than honoring the best college football player in America: tonight's ceremony will honor a 22-year old man who might not be a hero, but who has surely demonstrated a hero's courage and strength.

Even if you have no interest in The Ohio State Buckeyes or college football in general, the story of Troy Smith is something you should hear.

If you think most athletes are immature thugs and college sports have no redeeming value, then the story of Troy Smith might just change your mind.
___________________________________
Troy Smith was a nine-year old little boy crying in the parking lot after a football game because he has no one to pick him up and no home to go to. No one has been to watch him play all year. His mom was struggling with a drug dependency and was unable to care for Troy or his sister. He was so clearly a kid in distress that his pee-wee football coach arranged to become his foster parent and took Troy in. His sister went to live with an aunt.

Later that year, Troy and his foster dad spent much of Christmas Eve looking for his mom so that he could give her the Christmas present that he'd bought for her. When she wasn't to be found, he gave that present to his foster mother.

After four years of a stable, loving foster home, Troy was returned to his mom without forewarning or consideration for the emotional toll it would take on him. He was an angry young man and he developed a nasty temper. The family reunion wasn't comfortable or easy. As ESPN.com says

The Smiths had little in the way of comfort. By this time the Smiths had moved to 71st and St. Clair, inhabiting a neighborhood rife with urban dangers. The area was brutal, but it was home.

Sports saved Troy from the troubles that ensnared countless peers. At Martin Luther King Junior High he played soccer, tennis, basketball and track. And he played football for the older version of the Glenville A's in the Cleveland Muni League.

"I go back and see the guys I grew up with," Smith said. "Some of them are incarcerated. Some of them, rest their souls, have passed away. But the ones that are still there, when I see them, their whole month or year has changed. They light up like a Christmas tree.
Eventually the situation between Troy and his mom got so rough that Troy's high school coach (and father of his team mate Ted Ginn, Jr.) took Troy in to live with his family for the rest of his high school career. Ted Ginn, Sr. eventually arranged counseling for Troy and his mom and even went to the first few sessions to make sure they both went and the session was productive.

Sports was Troy's salvation and he was recruited by Ohio State and the little football coach in the sweatervest, Jim Tressel, the man who wears a "what would jesus do bracelet" and never loses his temper or his cool. Troy was considered a risk--a hot-headed young man who came with a lot of risks. That assessment almost proved true.

Troy's troubles weren't behind him. In his freshman year, Troy partied too hard, still got angry too much and eventually got arrested for fighting. He spoke out about his lack of playing time and refused to watch film. He didn't need to.
In his sophomore year, he put the entire football program in jeopardy by taking money from a booster. He was suspended for two games and watched Ohio State's bowl game that year at home in Cleveland. This may have been the tipping point in his life. Sitting in the basement, watching that game, that he realized his bad decision affected the entire team:

"That was rough," Ginn said. "He felt he let his teammates down. He let himself down. He let the university down. Troy loves hard. I don't care how he sits up and tries to show you he's a big strong man, Troy's got a good heart. He probably loves people who love him real hard. He loves his teammates. He loves Ohio State. He was embarrassed for that."

Smith was changed by looking at Ginn's basement shrine to Glenville stars Ginn Jr., Pierre Woods (Michigan-New England Patriots), Donte Whitner (OSU-Buffalo Bills) - and Smith.

"I'm watching TV and looking at all the things we have all done. I really, really got it in my head that there wouldn't be a situation like this again," Smith said in August. "(I knew) my team is first in everything. Running onto the field with my guys is something I'll never take (for granted) again. That's probably the best feeling in the world.

So now consider what has happened to our angry young man since he had that epiphany:
  • He is 25-2 as a starter.
  • He has beaten Michigan three times (only one other OSU quarterback has done that).
  • He says his love for his team mates is the most important motivator he has.
  • He now speaks "team-speak"and deflects questions about himself.
  • He opens door, removes his hat in doors and thanks others for their time.
  • He earned a degree in communications in four years (he's working on a second degree right now in order to remain eligible to play ball).
  • He now considers his mother his best friend (she says he's her hero).
  • When asked about the Heisman, he would only speak of taking his mother to New York for the first time and how he looked forward to spending this time with her.
That little 9-year old has become a 22 year old man and this December night will be much different for both that man and his mother than that horrible December night 13 years ago. That man and his mother will be together and in New York City for the first time in their lives. He will be named the best football player in the country.

But for many Troy Smith's ability to forgive and love and mature will remain the real heroic act of his life.

For his heroic acts on the field, check this out

It's Go Time, Baby

It's official. The Ohio State University will play the University of Florida in the BCS National Championship Game.

For the record, the University of Michigan got hosed and Michigan fans should be wicked angry at God and everybody.

But the most annoying thing about Michigan fans is that they never do get wicked angry at anyone.

For further updates and entertainment between now and January 8, we recommend that you check Every Day Should be Saturday a most excellent sports blog that just happens to be written by some Florida guys.

Script Ohio

In honor of BCS selection day:
The Band (aka The Best Damn Band in the Land) is as important to Ohioans as the football team. Here is Script Ohio performed before the 2006 OSU Michigan Game, with a little bonus footage at the end....

If you take time to watch this, notice how the crowd goes wild when the Drum Major picks up the tuba who will dot the i, and then listen to 105,000 people sing along with the band. It's a sacred tradition, unlike no other for us Buckeyes. Michigan, you can keep The Victors. We've got Script.
